What Are CEREC Crowns?
CEREC dental crowns are made from porcelain. They serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. On the surface-level, a crown covers your whole tooth and blends into the rest of your smile. It is natural-looking and a great way to hide any cosmetic imperfections, like chips or cracks.
When it comes to functionality, same-day crowns can also help prevent tooth decay and rot. Even minor cracks in the tooth’s surface layer (enamel) can pose a risk of bacteria growth and infection. With a crown, you can avoid tooth extraction and instead restore your smile and oral health.
How Do They Work?
A crown covers your entire tooth to the gumline. In addition to being placed alone or together, crowns can also form the abutment that holds a dental bridge. We can use same-day crowns to completely change the shape and appearance of a tooth, giving you a brand-new smile in just one visit.
Preparation
Your dentist will first prep your tooth/teeth to receive the crown; this involves shaping the tooth to make room for the crown while also treating the gumline to ensure a perfect fit. Part of crown preparation also includes a comprehensive cleaning, filling any empty spots with a substance called gutta-percha, then smoothing the surface to ensure optimal bonding.
Crown Creation
Using measurements from digital scans, we create a three-dimensional design of your crowns using the CEREC® 3D system. Once you approve of the look, we use a milling system to shape a block of porcelain into your crown. The entire process takes about 30 minutes.
Placement
After ensuring the crown perfectly matches your teeth’s color and shape, your dentist will place the crown. In just one appointment, you’ll have a sparkling smile that’s ready for the holidays and beyond!
