Some tooth wear is normal for everyone.  Abrasion can occur as a result of simple chewing if teeth are just not very strong.  Or, it could be a matter of a highly acidic diet, tooth grinding during sleep or when stressed, or other habits.  If your teeth show excess signs of wear, try to monitor your day-to-day routine for habits or foods that may contribute to enamel erosion.  Ask a household member if you’re grinding your teeth unintentionally, unmercifully.  In general, watch your stress level.  Then, discuss your observations with your dentist.  Often times a side affect of excess wear of the teeth is overall tooth sensitivity and even gum recession that can expose a portion of the root of the tooth.  A mouthguard to wear during sleep is sometimes a solution to help slow down the wear of teeth and protect the gums from further recession.  In some cases, fluoride treatments can reduce sensitivity and strengthen teeth.  And for some patients, a simple change in diet could make a dramatic affect on the health of the teeth.
